Margaret-Mary Opstelten, Gladstone West State School
Margaret-Mary is the current Prep to Year 3 HPE teacher at Gladstone West State School. She coordinates, and coaches the sport aerobics and tennis programs – both competitive and recreational.  A Senior Experienced teacher with over 40 years of teaching involvement, Margaret-Mary has a philosophy that everyone can enjoy and participate in a physical activity at their ability level. As a child, Margaret-Mary competed in gymnastics which led to coaching, judging and managing state and national gymnastic teams. One memorable highlight was being selected to be the flag bearer for the Australian team in the Opening Ceremony for the World Gymnaestrada in Sweden.

Technology in HPE
Technology is an effective support for teachers to accomplish their learning objective. Margaret-Mary is looking forward to demonstrating how technology can work for your classes. When COVID changed the way we taught, the passion for digital resources was reignited! Ultimately using the right digital program or tool can lead to student enthusiasm and engagement, rediscovering excitement in teaching and support learning content. Discover how the use of an app (IMG Play) and a program called Plickers can reinvent any HPE lesson. Both IMG Play and Plickers are free and offer so many creative uses.

Andrew Cordery
Andrew Cordery has been teaching PE and gymnastics in schools and gymnastics clubs around the country for the past 20 years, most recently at Ascot Park Primary School. In 2015, he started Alpha Gymnastics – a club with a focus on teaching fundamental movement skills through a gymnastics-based curriculum which offered public classes as well as servicing local primary schools through the Sporting Schools program. He has served on State and National committees and has developed educational resources across several GymSports. He is also an internationally accredited judge and judged at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and 2014 World Championships. He is currently taking leave from teaching to focus on a new position as Operations Manager at Koorana Gymnastics Club in Adelaide.

Finding the right balance – teaching gymnastics in primary schools
During this session, we will use “A Quick Guide to Gymnastics for Teachers” as the foundation for developing a gymnastics unit for your school. Limited equipment? No problem! This session will provide ideas using traditional PE equipment and other resources your school may already have. Think playgrounds and grassy hills! We will run through practical examples of activities and concepts for differentiation within a school.
