Honorary Mention: LYDP Surf Lifesaving Loganlea State High School

Loganlea State High School has a partnership with Kirra Surf Life Saving Club that has existed for over 10 years. Students travel to Kirra SLSC to complete qualifications in Certificate II in Public Safety, Bronze Medallion, Inflatable Boat Operations (IRB) and Surf Rescue Certificate. Students gain committee membership which allows them to become fully qualified surf lifesavers so that they can patrol Kirra beach throughout the summer. Leadership and personal development are key goals in the program and its success can be seen in both the students who have become national champions in surf lifesaving and those who have shown initiative and skill to save lives in real life emergencies.
The LYDP programs helps improve students’ health and fitness. The program takes students from Logan and embraces them in the healthy lifestyle associated with being a surf lifesaver. In a recent School Review, the LYDP program and partnership with Kirra SLSC was spoken about as being an exemplar for how partnerships should be done in schools. The report states that the partnership and program "has become an accepted and valued part of the fabric and culture of the school". Some of the specific outcomes achieved include:
Developing the leadership of students resulting in outstanding school captains. In 2020, three of the four school captains at Loganlea SHS developed their leadership through the LYDP program.
Saving lives - one of the LYDP students used the CPR they learned though the program to provide CPR to member of the public which saved his life.
Improving attendance, behaviour and academic outcomes - as part of the LYDP program, students must maintain excellent attendance, behaviour and academic outcomes. All students have an attendance rate above 90%, pass all their subjects and maintain excellent behaviour.
