Senior Sport & Rec Masterclass

sport & recreation teachers

Wednesday 24 November - Online

The ACHPER QLD Masterclass series has been designed to offer Sport & Recreation teachers a deep dive into the content areas covered in this applied senior subject.

The Topic Focus Areas for 2021 will be:
1. Coaching
2. Tournament Organisation (using the Champion Basketball School of Queensland 2021 Tournament as a guide)
3. Expedition Planning.

Dr Steven Rynne from The University of Queensland will be our master presenter for the Coaching Focus. Iain McLennan, Basketball Queensland Competition Manager will be the master presenter for the Tournament Organisation Focus. Dom Courtney from Outdoors Queensland, is our Master Presenter for the Health related focus: Expedition Planning.

Dr Steven Rynne is an Associate Professor and Program Convenor for Sports Coaching with the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at The University of Queensland. The major theme that runs throughout Steven’s work is learning in sport. Within this broad theme he has worked and conducted research with a variety of peak domestic and international sporting bodies aimed at fostering high performance through learning (e.g. how elite coaches learn their craft) and understanding outcomes for sport participants (e.g. sport for reconciliation). Steven teaches undergraduate and graduate students, is a cycling coach, and has been immersed in junior and community sport settings for more than two decades.

The focus of this session is ‘quality coaching’. In considering the notion of quality, we’ll explore:
The form and nature of coaches’ work;
The knowledge that informs coaching practice;
Coaching behaviours that are commonly exhibited by coaches.

Iain McLennan, Basketball Queensland Competition Manager, will be the master presenter for the Tournament Organisation Focus. Iain organises the Champion Basketball School of Queensland tournaments each year featuring Open, Sophomore and Junior Secondary and Primary age groups.  The open event alone attracts a great deal of interest from all schools across the state each year with over 120 boys and girls teams competing across several open-age divisions. The winning team from each Boys & Girls Open Championship Division gains automatic entry into Basketball Australia’s Australian Schools Championships held each year in December.
Iain session will cover the following topics:
Preparation for tournaments
Liaising with customers/stakeholders
At-tournament responsibilities
Post-tournament review and discussion
